I am excited to share news of a (big) pivot in my art career.
My friends, Michelle and Ray Troll, who created and honed the beloved Soho Coho Gallery in Ketchikan for 31 years, are moving on to new ventures and closed the space December 31st. And...I am stepping up to continue the institution as Star Gallery in spring 2024!
As I add the role of gallerist, I will be taking a few less commissions and
Opening Spring 2024
simplifying my studio work to heart projects. (Since they are ALL heart projects, this appears it will take some practice.)
After 27 years of working fairly solo in the studio, I am excited about the social nature of the job, which I have been learning from Michelle and the generous crew at the Soho this past summer season. Keeping a local shop in Ketchikan, and focusing on local art and artists is important to me.
The Star will keep the same vibe and culture that we love and be home for my linocuts, the subtly surreal characters from Grace Freeman, and Ray Trolls artwork and complete line of world-renowned art t-shirts. Stay tuned for surprises updates as we evolve in the next months!
Why will the name be STAR GALLERY?
The name honors the building and location—# 5 Creek Street is the historic STARHOUSE, circa 1902. It was the dance hall for the creek (red light district), in it's hey day. The building is built on pilings over the fish creek which runs through the center of Ketchikan.
The building was beautifully restored in the 1991 by Steve Reeve and Karen Wolfred, who preserved a lot of the original materials, including siding and a large maple STAR inlaid in the center of the wood dance floor. And my friends will tell you...I LOVE a good dance floor!
#5 Creek Street Ketchikan, Alaska 99901 | will be open all-year long
Update: February 16, 2024
Steve's crew has been working hard. on some repairs and maintenance on Star House before Star Gallery moves in.
Here is a peek of the star during the sanding process.
And another after the finish has been applied.
The 110 year old floor is alive!
